Wealth building isn’t linear: Meet the three archetypes
Our report on wealth-building in Newark uncovered a different picture of wealth-building, one that is dynamic, adaptive, and deeply shaped by people’s circumstances.
When we talk about wealth-building, we often imagine a straightforward path: build financial stability, save money, invest, and steadily accumulate wealth over time.
But the experiences shared by SaverLife members living in Newark, New Jersey, suggest that this traditional model misses much of what wealth-building actually looks like for low- and moderate-income households.
For many people, financial progress is not a linear progression. It is a dynamic process shaped by changing circumstances, competing priorities, available resources, and tolerance for risk. People may be saving while starting a business, paying down debt while investing in education, or building an emergency fund while exploring new income streams.
In other words, wealth-building is not a single path. It is a set of evolving strategies that people adapt as their lives, goals, and opportunities change.
To better understand these journeys, we identified three distinct but interconnected wealth-building archetypes that reflect how Newark members navigate financial progress in practice.
A different way to think about wealth building
Importantly, these archetypes are not stages in a journey. People don’t necessarily move from one to the next in a predictable order.
Someone may embody aspects of multiple archetypes at once. A person building an emergency fund may also be launching a side business. An investor may still be focused on maintaining stability. Life events, economic conditions, and personal goals can all influence which strategies people prioritize at different moments.

What remains consistent is the desire to move forward.
Together, these archetypes reveal the different ways people build wealth based on their goals, resources, opportunities, and constraints.
For practitioners, funders, policymakers, and community organizations, this framework can help create more responsive supports that meet people where they are and recognize the many ways wealth building happens in practice.
