The future of financial guidance

People don’t need more financial information. They need support navigating their financial life.

Financial guidance should reflect real life

Every day, people make dozens of financial decisions.

Which bill can wait? Should I build savings or pay down debt? Can I afford to repair the car now, or should I wait? What happens if my hours get cut next month?

These decisions rarely have one right answer. They depend on each person’s goals, obligations, resources, and what’s happening in their life at that moment.

That’s why the future of financial guidance isn’t more information. It’s guidance that understands each person’s unique circumstances and helps them identify the next meaningful step.

Why personalization is a game changer

For decades, financial guidance has largely been designed for the average person.

Articles. Checklists. Budget templates. Calculators.

These tools can be helpful, but they all start with the same assumption, that everyone asking the same question needs the same answer.

Real life doesn’t work that way.

Someone like Mahiyat, who is focused on paying off student loans, needs different support than someone like Sara preparing for retirement. A parent like Adam, rebuilding after a flood, faces different priorities than someone like Janelle, a small business owner. Financial guidance should reflect those differences and evolve alongside people’s lives as their needs and priorities change.

The future of financial guidance isn’t about delivering more answers.

It’s about understanding context.

SaverLife’s Financial Navigator: Guidance that works alongside you

We believe financial guidance should do more than answer questions. It should help people navigate the financial decisions they face throughout their lives. We envision it as something that stays with them—learning from each interaction, adapting as life changes, and offering timely support, encouragement, and next steps throughout their financial journey.

That’s why we’re building the SaverLife Financial Navigator. Powered by artificial intelligence, the Navigator develops a deeper understanding of each member over time by bringing together:

  • Their goals. What they’re trying to accomplish right now and what they’re working toward in the future.
  • Their financial situation. The challenges, tradeoffs, and opportunities unique to their circumstances.
  • What they share with us. The questions they ask, the choices they make, and the priorities they identify along the way.
  • Transactional data. How people actually navigate their financial lives over time, from spending and saving to debt repayment and income changes.
  • Behavioral and research insights. What we’ve learned by partnering with more than 800,000 members about how people actually navigate financial life.

But understanding someone’s financial life is only the beginning.

Unlike traditional financial tools that wait for someone to seek help, the Navigator is designed to stay engaged over time. As members’ goals evolve and life changes, it builds on what it has learned to provide timely, personalized guidance—helping people recognize opportunities, navigate challenges, celebrate progress, and take the next meaningful step before they even know to ask.

What we’re learning

The future of financial guidance won’t be built by any one organization.

As we partner with members, test new ideas, and continue building the Navigator, we are constantly learning. Every member conversation, product intervention, and research initiative helps us better understand how people navigate financial life—and those insights continue to shape our products, research, and approach.

Because we believe this work should benefit the broader field, we’re committed to sharing what we’re learning along the way. These are a few of the insights that are influencing how we think about the future of financial guidance.

Our members are resourceful. They compare prices, research solutions, seek advice, and explore different ways to make ends meet. But when every decision involves tradeoffs, choosing between multiple reasonable paths can become overwhelming. Sometimes the hardest part isn’t taking action—it’s deciding which action matters most.

Financial progress rarely happens through one big decision. It happens through small, achievable actions that build confidence over time. Instead of asking people to solve everything at once, we believe financial guidance should help people identify the next meaningful step—one that feels realistic, manageable, and relevant to where they are today.

The most helpful guidance doesn’t simply exist, it shows up when it’s needed. Whether someone is recovering from a natural disaster, navigating a policy change, facing an unexpected expense, or reaching an important milestone, support should reflect what’s happening in people’s lives. The right guidance delivered at the right time can make the difference between feeling stuck and moving forward.

The Opportunity Ahead

For decades, financial guidance has focused on helping people understand their finances. The next generation will help people navigate them.

Building that future requires more than advances in artificial intelligence. It requires a deeper understanding of how people actually experience their financial lives, and designing guidance around those realities.

That’s why we’re building AI-powered financial guidance alongside our members and sharing what we learn so others can create better financial products, services, and systems too.

Because the future of financial guidance isn’t something one organization will create alone.

It’s something we’ll build together.
