Homeownership as a path to wealth-building

For LaShette, home ownership is a sign of wealth-building.

  • SaverLife

For SaverLife member LaShette, homeownership has been part of her family lineage for nine decades. When her grandparents bought a house in Newark in the 1930s, it was a family home and hub for communion. Laying the foundation for her to see home ownership as her primary goal and a sign of wealth-building.

As a mother of four, a grandmother to two, and the “family manager” who juggles caregiving for many in her family while working at an institute of higher education. Lashette’s wealth-building goals are to create stability for the next generation.

To me, owning a home is family… It can create that stability for the next generation…
Lashette, saverlife member

To advance on her path to wealth-building, she decided at 40 to join the Navy Reserves to increase her earnings and help her purchase a home in the future. Living in Newark for 15 years has shown that good intentions to support wealth-building can greatly benefit its community members.
