Considered poverty level income and trying to save. Any tips??

Have you applied for Lifeline or the Emergency Broadband programs? If you qualify, you can save about $10/month on your phone bill and $50/month on your internet service.

This is also something I'm struggling with. Love my job but the pay is not sustainable and I'm unsure of what to do.

Look at ways to cut your expenses and also ways to increase your income. Try also setting up a direct deposit from your paycheck into savings accounts for specific purposes (emergency fund, car, kids, etc.)

Rebecca G: I am also considered poverty level, but have managed to save some. I am very fortunate in my situation, and not everything may be practicle for your situation, but here are the main things I do (to lower expenses):

  • Use a MVNO (mobile virtual network operator). The one I use is called Tello as it allows me to pick my own plan (like a buffet table for phone plans); coverage it not widespread, but it seems to cover most highways and major cities. As I live in a coverage area and do not travel much [when I do, it is through highways], I have had no issue with services.
  • I live with others (who are cost conscious), and we split rent, household food/groceries, and transportation evenly between ourselves. We separate fast food as personal expenses, but groceries, toiletries, utilities, and other things that are difficult to say how much one uses are shared expenses.
  • This one is difficult and most likely impractical for others. Fully direct deposit my paycheck into a savings account. Currently, you are only allowed 6 withdrawls a quarter (to simplify, I allow myself two withdrawls a month.)

You'll need to know when bills are due and how much they will be at least three days before the due date for this to work. I like to pay my bills with a credit card so that the total is easier to tally (for one transfer), but you have to have good discipline and knowledge of what you can and cannot pay. I also like to add an allowance/buffer to my transfer, usually $20, for fun-money that'll stay in my checking unless I decide to put it back to savings for interest.

To increase income:

I use an app called Current [Radio] for a bit of support. How much one earns depends on how long they listen to music, whether they do any of the options to increase the earnings rate (not necessary, though it can be helpful), and [I assume from my experience] whether one varies the radio stations they listen to once in a while. It is not worth it to everyone, and it probably doesn't do more than $20 a month for the most active user, but I like it as a bit of passive-ish income.

I also use Amazon MTurk…which I find is a hit or miss for time-to-pay ratio (often a miss for me), but it might be something to look into. Most conclude that it is not great use of time, but if you are not doing much with your time anyways, it is…so-so okay.

You might be able to pick up a little extra income working from home on Clickworker or Neevo.

Clickworker is hit or miss. I attempted to earn some extra money with them and ended up earning $3.80 in 2 weeks. Had I read the reviews prior to downloading & wasting my time I would have steered clear. The biggest thing that has saved me money is remembering this, “Wants vs. Needs”. A good part of the time I used to justify wants, and then wondered why I stayed broke. Secondly, I used to stop every morning before work at a convenient store to buy a RedBull & snack, and stop again on my commute back home. That in itself was costing me $10 a day. That’s ridiculous. That’s $300 per month and $3,600 per year. It was a difficult habit to break and I feel foolish for doing it as long as I did. Just putting away $5 a week - let’s face it, you can find that in the couch cushions- is something, and is a good start. Apps that I’ve had success with earning extra are: Ipsos I-Say survey panel, ReceiptPal, Receipt Hog, & Drop. Rewards/Earnings can be cashed out for Amazon, PayPal, Apple gift cards, and many more. It’s not gonna make you rich, but it may help pay your phone bill, or help your income in some way.
