I don't understand it either but I've been doing a little research and asking financial advisors at my credit union for a more detailed explanation of the concepts I can't understand. I spoke to a broker and it seemed like he was trying to push me into investing in something that I didn't understand.
Just starting out I'd opt for VERY conservative funds such as a basket of short term government obligations. Starting out this should be the majority of your investing.
Then put a little into a fund of major US stocks like the Redwood fund that has some risk but high potential. And maybe put a little into a major market index fund of your fancy.
I've also received some nice returns from DOW, the plastics maker, and Pfizer give a good stable dividend.
This basically is the formula I'm using right now because even the experts don't know which way the markets are about to go given recent events.
thanks for the information, i will look into those..

I relish the volitility. There is long-term upside to be had if you can weather the short-term swings.

I'm just learning about investing. Savers life has helped me a lot.
Every day, I make sure to save a little more. I got a medical bill waived. I'm so grateful.
I'm investing my extra money by buying Mutual Funds that hold companies I believe in.
Yes, very good.

Good to hear. An IRA caps out at $6,000 in contributions per year. Try to max out every year when possible.
Do your research before investing.
