Has anyone helped their student(s) pay for college without taking out a Parent Plus loan? I would love for @Saverlife to provide tips not just loan information.

A 529 plan is a great way to save for college. Money used for qualified education expenses can be taken out federal income tax free. This website provides a wealth of resources related to 529 plans as well as other ways to save for college expenses https://www.savingforcollege.com/

I'm a college student and was able to cover most of my tuition with scholarships and grants. I really focused on doing well in school starting in 9th grade. I applied for lots of scholarships during my senior year of high school. There was an organization in my county that managed dozens of scholarships, so it made it easier to find them and apply. Because we don't have a lot of money, and I'm from a poor school district, I was offered large grants from the biggest public universities in my state. I actually would have paid a lot more if I had gone to community college! So don't assume that CC is always the best option. It doesn't hurt to apply to the big universities that have lots of donors and supportive alumni because you might be surprised at their offer, especially if your child is a good student. Once you're accepted, you fill out a scholarship profile for your university, and then they funnel your applications to different alumni associations and private scholarships. My brother and I both received scholarships after we were accepted and that we didn't even realize we'd applied for. It's not something you can count on because sometimes the scholarships just show up a week or two before our bills are due. My brother and I both have kind of unique hobbies that we could relate to the fields we wanted to study, and I think that made us interesting to the scholarship committees. Anyway, good luck!
