I write an itemized list of all my expenses for the month and stick to it. You might not be able to notice right away but it does work.

When creating a budget it is a good idea to go and look at your total expenses from previous months. Then you will want to categorize those expenses into needs, debt repayment, spending and savings. Seeing the amount in categories can show you areas where you may be overspending and could cut expenses to move to other categories.
